I did a water damaged car once. If you have the time
to work on it and get a good price, they can be a
great deal. Much better than a wreck IMHO. One thing
to check is the condition of the cylinder walls.
These will be among the first things to go in an
underwater vehicle. After being driven, there isn't
any oil on the cylinder walls. Sitting for a long
period of time will rust these badly. Orange surface
rust means nothing. Pitted cylinder walls does. I
had the good fortune to use a type of borescope from
my nextdoor neighbor who worked for Toyota coporate.
The guy wasn't too keen on letting me take spark plugs
out, but after I got the scope out, he relaxed.
Electricals all need to be opened, checked, cleaned
and sprayed. Otherwise, an excellent car at an
unbeatable price. (Not counting my labor.)
