you should spray some decent lubricant into the latch mechanism and
anywhere else you can get to annually, if you remember.

Keeps things from binding, sticking, and helps repel moisture.  If it's
been a while, work the mechanism a few time while lubing to get it into
all the moving parts.  You should be able to latch as if shutting the
door with a screwdriver shaft to do this more rapidly.
