grrr...type 44 volt jolt

Damn these audi gods...I have no time, no money, and of course something new
pops up. Car is a '87 5kcstq w/180k mi.:

After driving a while this morning, a light in the shape of a battery beeped
"VOLT".  What the hell is that?!

Got a new battery about 18 mos. ago; belts replaced 3 wks ago (no loose belt
sounds).  What to check?
