Whoa. Tight enough is tight enough. One man's "very" might be
another man's "almost". :-P Kinda like the "thumb and forefinger,
90 degree twist" rule for the timing belts.
I'm not sure if there's a spec for the belt tightness (I think there is).
If you make it too tight, you will wear out the bearings, requiring
replacement. I think if it's tight enough not to slip, it's tight enough.
Anything more and you will wear stuff out.
I would have been able to just replace the brushes and regulator on
my 5kcstq alternator, had the bearings not been totally shot.
Since they were shot, I ended up upgrading to a 150a "ultranator"
from Avi Meron. This required swapping to the newer 200 style
alternator bracket/front engine "mount" protrusion piece. I believe
it's a converted 110a unit. It's the higher output and more
expensive of two options he offers. The other is the original style
90a alt., which is converted to higher output. IIRC.
Later,
Ken
