Hey Rob.
Over tightening the Alt. belt is a sure recipe to ruining the alt. front
bearing!
It's a good idea not to overdue it!
BTW Rob. The alt. also goes BAD..............not just the VR! Diodes,
windings, bearings and on on..........
Take care,
Avi

2 things...
Check to make sure the belts are VERY tight...on the type 44 they are
notorious for slipping.
If your the mechanical type and have access to a voltmeter/multimeter, make
sure you have at least 12.7 vdc at the battery terminals with the car
running. Optimal should be 13.0 to 13.5 volts DC, but you can make do with
a slightly lower reading.
If you have less than that, could be one of 2 things. 1 is the voltage
regulator on the back of the alternator. About 15-18$ at the local
autoparts place and 2 screws hold it in, very easy to change. If that
doesnt fix the problem, then you have the dreaded battery cable splice
problem. Someone, I think Chris Miller, has the procedure outlined on their
site, plus im sure its in the archives. Its not that hard to do, just a bit
of a pain.
Good luck
Rob

Damn these audi gods...I have no time, no money, and of course something new
pops up. Car is a '87 5kcstq w/180k mi.:
After driving a while this morning, a light in the shape of a battery beeped
"VOLT". What the hell is that?!
Got a new battery about 18 mos. ago; belts replaced 3 wks ago (no loose belt
sounds). What to check?
