Yes, anytime a temp sensor signal is cut from an ecu its ability to properly control the fuel mixture is completely compromised. In Paul's case it could be an air-temp sensor too, which will give similar results. It could be a bunch of things, but that is the first place I'd look, especially considering the check is so easy to do, and is quite common amoung all Audi's IME.
