Depends on the light, of course.
The 5ktq/200 DOT lights can be had for somewhere in the neighborhood of
$300 each.
I got my Euro lights for the 200 for about $650 (incl. customs and
shipping), so that's
about the same.
As per Lee's comment- upgradeability of the lighting system is
definitely important
to me, and one of the reasons why I like European (namely German) cars.
However, with
some ingenuity, this can be done with other makes & models.
I upgraded my old Pathfinder by "downgrading" to the sealed-beam setup
from the Nissan
P/U, then replacing the sealed beam lamps with standard Hella 200mm H4s,
using sealed-
beam pigtails with the wiring in the correct orientation. I didn't know
any better at
the time, so I butt-spliced the wires and used electrical tape on the
connection- no
relays, no nice solder and heat-shrink job, sorry. Then I found out that
the German-spec
Euro H4 Terrano setup could be sourced, which would have been a more
plug-and-play affair
w/o buying a new grille and so forth.
Then again, some of the newer non-European cars have decent headlights
to begin with-
the Infiniti I35 I test drove had a very nice cutoff (but not a proper
E-code cutoff)
with the HID lights.
You know, you can even get H4 lights for a B-body Chevy Caprice-
amazingly, they were
exported to Europe and other parts of the world. The only reason I know
this is because
I have a soft spot for the LT-1 powered Impala SS.
