The old 3 speed transmission has no electric connections at all, it's a
purely hydraulic device with a rod operated throttle valve.
Your problem sounds like a sticking valve to me. A good mechanic aquainted
with automatic transmissions repair might remove the valve body, clean it
and see if all the valves operate correctly. This could cure the problem.
