Do I Really Need the Tools?

George,

No, You won't need any special Audi/VW tools for this job. Your car should
have the older style mounting, 3 vibration isolating grommets for the
base, while the pump assembly is mounted with a worm-gear clamp.

Even if you had the newer 90-91 200 fuel pump mount, you don't need their
special tool to remove the pump. All is required is a large square-shank
screwdriver for leverage to pop the mounting off/on.

I replaced my BUZZING Bosch pump with an aftermarket Pierburg pump($160)
over the Xmas holidays. Even though I took my time, being careful, it only
takes 2 hours max, (in 15*F weather).
The Pierburg pump will fit old and new style mounts, and runs quiet enough
that it doesn't need the Bosch anti-noise device bolted above the pump
body.
I was told that Audi is now using Pierburg pumps as OEM in their new cars.
quality control over Bosch was the reason(?).

The only things you should have on hand....
1.brass punch, plastic mallet or deadblow hammer.
2.Nitrile gloves (won't disolve in Gas).
3.fluorescent work light.
4.Several new copper crush washers and small (1/2"-3/4") worm gear clamps.
(Washers are for the high pressure line union in the cover plate, and the
clamps for the vapor and return lines)
5.A 5' long plastic hose (~1" in dia.) to breath through like a snorkel.
(the fumes are overwhelming, even outdoors)
6.An old blanket to drape over the back of the trunk opening, so the trunk
won't accidentally slam shut and lock you inside the trunk with all those
nasty fumes.
:-)

Just keep a sharp mental note of the hose and wiring orientation. The
angles are key to not interfere with the sender's float arm.
