cracked lens

I'm so smart it hurts. I had lost both low (dipped) beams on my
80/100W Euro headlights. High beams gave me a high beam on one
side, and both hi/lo on the other, which I found curious. In a
monkey lad move, I duct taped over the high beam of the high/low
combination, to reduce the number of your-high-beams-are-on
flashes so I could get to a Boston Celtics basketball game.
Well, I got around to replacing the bulbs. I gave up replacing
the bulbs the normal way and removed the headlights themselves
to do it. I spent less time removing the grill and lights than
I did trying to install the dang bulbs in situ. The key is that
the slots for the metal tabs are at 2:30 and 8:30 (facing
the back of the headlight unit), the white ears are at 5:30 and
11:30. I had to press in each tab when turning the retainer. I
tried that when the headlight was in place, but I just couldn't
get the positioning and leverage I needed.
Anyway, when I removed the duct tape, the lens had a nice (ugly)
U-shaped crack hiding behind the tape. The heat of the 100W
high beam, held in by the tape, together with the rain/sleet
and cold weather we've been having here in NH, did it in.
I'd hesitate to put that protective clear plastic shield on
my lenses.
Have a nice day,
