Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale...

Yup. Took it right out, and hooked up directly to the battery (using long
wires to avoid incinerating myself) both positive and negative terminals and
I got a little whirr then nada. On the one hand, it appears I squeezed
every last possible bit of pumping out of that unit. On the other hand, I
wish it would behave like others I have had where you can give them a
'gentle' tap and they could keep going for a while. In retrospect, I bet
that it probably actually died on the trip in, but the bumpiness of the road
kept giving it the 'taps' to go again. Finally, the end came.
