I have taken one of these pumps apart and it is just like any other electric
motor inside, bathed in petrol though.
So it can fail with the 2 usual methods.
1. Brushes worn out, silent failure.
2. Bearings worn out, noisy failure.
Data point. On my 87 coupe quattro the old pump was so noisy, it drowned out
the engine noise at idle.
And yes, it did 'pre-pump' before start up. New one could barely be heard.
