Odd starting problem

When I turn the key to the 'ignition on' position, all lights come on norma=
lly, the on board diagnostics give the 'OK' indication. But when I turn the=
 key to 'Start', I get a snap (seems to come from beside, and behind me) an=
d all goes dead. Cycling the key, seems to return system to normal but will=
 immediately go dead again when another start is attempted. I switched batt=
eries, but got the same result. Finally, I used a 12V/200A high start unit =
which I connected to see if it would make a difference. This resulted in ve=
ry scary relay noises...but no starter engagement.
Is the starter relay gone? (or a short in the starter)?
