No, the key is that one was a luxury sedan that cost $40,000 in 1987,
versus the others which are neither luxury nor top of the line.

Drive a Acura, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, etc and you'll be impressed, and
the 5000 will seem like a dinosaur in comparison(although a much
lighter dinosaur :-)

Precisely, and I would add that very frequently, the maintenance
costs come to far less than the cost of loan payments etc on even a
new car.

   For about what it costs to maintain my 200q20v, I could get some
itty bitty ford lunchbox with wheels.  Yeah, there's a contest.
