Actually, I understand that Audi did testing way back when and found that
quattro gave better fuel mileage at highway speeds.  The resistance of the
extra drivetrain was less than the resistance caused from a non-driven
wheel.  I'm not an engineer, but I've read this in many books, magazines,
etc.

PS -the urquattro has a 23.8 gallon tank.  yes 23.8 gallons.  It goes about
525 miles/tank on the hwy, which isn't really very good mpg--but they're
very fun miles.
