14.8v in the early cars?

Guys,

One of Avi's specials is headed my way and will be here
tomorrow...however, I'm having second thoughts about the  higher
voltage regulator.

Mainly, I'm working off the assumption that virtually everything in
the car is designed to work at 13.8, not 14.8, volts, unlike newer
cars which are specifically designed for 14.8.

Opinions?  Experience?
