I use a long 3/8 drive ext and come in from the back side. Along with a 30
year collection of Blue Point, Snap On, Craftsman and other tools, I have a
set of "TrueCraft" (japan) extensions which have a rounded drive on the male
end. This allows the socket to work at angles up to 10 - 15 degrees without
the problems of the U joint adapters. They also have a coarse knurling on
toward the female end so you can spin it with your fingers. The long ext is
perfect for this job.
Just loosen the nut enough to allow the adjustment bolt move without binding.
If you remove the nut it will just add more work than needed to the
reassembly process.
