Electrical Problems - Short on start attempt

I got a problem that has got me stumped.
After replacing a battery, I get a short at the battery when key turned to =
start (starter does not engage). I thought it might have been the starter/s=
olenoid, and had the starter and solenoid rebuilt (but the same problem sti=
ll occurs).
I got the rebuilt starter to spin, when I disconnected the alternator. I ha=
d the alternator output checked at the same time as the starter was rebuilt.
Without bench testing the alternator myself, does anyone have any ideas on =
what could be the problem?
