Quattrophile,

I intend to upgrade a marginal clutch in the '87 5000 Turbo Quattro Avant
with a 200 TQ setup.

This "while I'm at it" is a culmination of needing to repair EM
leak(installing 2-piece manifold) as well as an overdue timing belt as well
as the desire for more performence, but not at the expense of reliability.

Based onsome prior recommendations, head removal, valve lap, minor p&p will
be performed along with Elgin 264I/260E cam, new lifters, Techtonics
springs, new water pump, timebelt, tentionor, etc. The late round of
heated discussion has been very helpful in learning how to proceed. I plan
to use new stock head bolts providing they can handle the additional power
to be provided, not by increasing the boost but by installing freeflow
exhaust including cat, Garrett t03/t04 hybrid, and additional fueling
 along with aformentioned head work.

My big question of the day is regarding when and how to get at the clutch -
before removing head, while head is removed, or after? How can I most
easily do this - move the engine up and out, or should I drop trans.
despite the fact I'll be halfway to removing motor?

I definately have my work cut out, but want to do things so I won't have to
venture into this territory again, but don't want to do any more work than
necessary, yet not cut corners.

TIA for BTDT replies.

Ben
