How Do I Reset Check Engine/Malfunction Light on 98 A4 Avant

Car wouldn't start after turning it on briefly to move out of garage and
turning it off immediately.  Apparently this has happened to several A4
owners.  Well after 4 days of cranking I finally got it to start but now the
malfunction/check engine light is on.  Please tell me I don't have to take
it to a dealer to have it reset.  I'm sure one of you brilliant folks out
there has figured out a procedure.  Thanx.
