For a while Enterprise Rent A Car offered the Land Rover Discovery for
$49/day.

Not a bad price for a quick offroad fix, and the stock Discovery is
extremely capable.

I got more than a few chuckles when, midway through a day's excursion on
some "unimproved" roads in New Hampshire, some fellow Roverites found that
my vehicle was a rental. This was before I took the plunge and bought my '95
Rangie.

I also rented a Disco on several trips to CA, and visited Hollister Hills, a
playground for 4x4s.

Oh, and Roger, there's a pretty active Rover community in southern
Maine...you could always link up with them and go along as a passenger...
