On-board computer showing increased fuel consumption

Well, I'm talking here relatively steady highway driving in fifth gear, somewhat above 100
km/h. Normally, fuel
consumption oscillates between about 6 and say 16l/100 km. Suddenly, it starts showing 40
or 50, just to go
back to the normal range a few minutes later. Any ideas why?
