undercoating

Anyone familiar with either the factory undercoating or a suitable
substitute thereof.  I have a few underbody scrapes as well as a possible
plan of an underbody modification project which will both require the
correct supplies and knowledge to attend to.  Is there anything comparable
that is brushable?  Is spraying really preferable.  Any info would be
appreciated.  Also, anyone out there ever actually replace rocker panels?
Just curious.
