'87 4kq: install underhood hose, P/N 034-133-997

I just set about replacing this hose, since the old one was starting to split.
The hose is Y-shaped, with a total of 4 ends or holes, which are 3 different
diameters. The hole I'm concerned with looks to be about 1/4" to 3/8" in
diameter (the middle of the 3 sizes) and accepts a plastic pipe ~2" long. The
other end of the plastic pipe mates with another hose, which in turn leads to
(among other things) the cam cover.

Trouble is, the hose just doesn't want to go over that little plastic pipe. Any
tips? Am I just not holding my mouth right? TIA
