Cold Start Prob - Fuel Distributor

It seems to me that as they get older fuel distribs get a bit
incontinent under low control-pressure situations, -e.g. cold start up. On
my 100 despite having brand new injectors the fuel distrib sputters a bit of
fuel through the injectors with no movement of the air plate. Now due to the
action of the FPR this means that the sputtering only occurs on the intital
burst of Fuel Pump activation whe you switch the ignition on , and also when
cranking. In my case the sputtering also stops if the control pressure gets
above 2 bar (which it would do after a couple of seconds running) therefore
this doesn't affect normal running but I have found that the car starts from
cold better with the cold start valve disabled (by disconnecting the
electrical plug) because there's enough fuel coming from the injectors
anyway. If I reconnect the CSV supplly it just gets a bit too rich for a
clean start.
I can live with this for now, sometime I'll try and get a better secondhand
distrib.
So thats my suggestion - if it seems that your cold start problem is due
to a too rich condition try disconnecting the CSV plug. If it improves the
situation, check to see if the injectors are leaky or if the problem
described above is occuring.
All this assumes that your system is tuned for correct mixture /
emissiions once running, which my car is.
Don't know how this kind of stuff will go down with the monkey-lads at
the garage, the basic way of putting it might be 'Please find and fit a fuel
distrib which is not worn out' Beware that a recon fuel distrib from the
dealer is a mega-bucks proposition (about 350GBP in the uk)
