Sounds like the somewhat common fuel tank lining clogging the fuel pump
intake screen.
On the Type 44's the pump is the tank, and has a screen across its bottom
opening to filter out such nasties. Some on the list have recommended pulling
the pump, removing the screen, cleaning the tank as much as possible, and
re-install.
Personally, I would replace the pump. They are expensive, but also a bitch to
get to. I only want to do it once.
Access is at the top of the tank in the trunk, under the carpeted ledge by
the ski bag. You must twist a 7-8" locking ring to remove the cover. It takes
a little creativity but it can be done without a special tool. Remove the
pump carefully as the sender for the fuel gauge is also part of this
contraption. The emptier the tank the better, except that an empty tank
contains more fumes which are flammable. A full tank is not very explosive,
but an empty one will go off like a bomb. BE CAREFUL. Ventilate profusely.
It sounds bad, but there are worse jobs on the 44s.
