That sounds remarkably like the oil temp sender (or dummy fill) setup
mounted in the bottom of the oil pump - right at the very front of the
oil pan... sort of... but if it was mounted in the oil pan in the
"correct" drain plug location, it just sounds like a rather creative
substitution for a mangled drain plug once upon a time (as so many fairy
tales begin)
