Speedo cable lube?

What should one use, or even should one use anything, to lube an Audi speedo
cable? I had my speedometer rebuilt, and it works fine, but the cable from
the fire wall box to the gauge howls like a bad bearing when the weather gets
cold (which it _really_ is right now).
BTW, what is that box at the firewall? The Bentley is only concerned with
electrical when it comes to gauges.
