Did you use the original gauge cluster?
You might want to check dimmer wiring.

Does your car have the older under dash fuse box?
The newer cars are much, much easier to convert as all the wiring colour
codes match.
On the older cars it is a pain (BTDT on '82 Coupe) as you always have to
match the appropriate wires to avoid under dash fires.
On my Ur-q (newer wiring) it only took me less than a day.
On the '82 Coupe however it was a different story involving use of fire
extinguisher and lot's of smoke.

However the newer dash looks 100 times better than the old one.
