I figured out that my 1990 100q is leaking pentosin
out of the middle of the pump. What I was wondering
about were my options. Can the pump be rebuilt, or is
it better to get a new (used but not leaking) pump?
And my next question is does anyone have a pump out
there? Is it a good idea to replace the hoses while
you got the thing apart and are in the area? I'm
destroying my driveway with oil leaks and would like
to do this as soon as possible. Thanks.
The middle is where the 2 halves of the case join together. You can try
tightening the allen bolts in the rear of the pump that hold these 2 halves
together. But that usually doesn't work. It's probably not leaking because
those bolts loosened up. It's leaking there because the "O"-rings at the
seal there have flattened over time.
The usual fix is to buy a ZF rebuilt one. ZF is the OEM. Try the usual
sources (Force 5, Rod, Blau, etc.). They were about $180 a few years ago.
New ones are very expensive. You can try a $25 rebuild kit. It really
isn't a rebuild kit - more of a reseal kit. If the "X" caps aren't leaking,
leave them alone.
