Like several of the other listers who responded, I simply bend the last coil
over to form a new loop.  If you form a closed loop (unlike the factory open
loop) you can feed a long zip tie through the eye on the flapper door,
through the new closed loop and then simply pull the zip tie tight.  Cut off
the end of the tie and the job is done.  Easier IMO than fighting with the
spring.
