Actually the parts are not that bad, there are very few parts that are
unique (body mostly), and the once that are unique are usually not
maintenance itemas anyway (like the air box). Even the struts, front you
could use 5kt (with slight modification BTDT) and rear you could use 4kq
units (with ur-q 5 bolt hubs).
Tune up parts are the same as for other models (except spark plugs).
Brakes are same as others, the suspension only the tie rods and ball joints,
but you can get creative and make your own tie rod ends with replacable ends
(BTDT).

All and all I would say the only parts that could give trouble are the ball
joints, but even that you could try the Audi 90 units and drill out the
strut to accept it.
Rest of the mechanical components can either be easily fabricated or come
from other models.
If you want to rally the thing, you would be doing a lot of modifications
anyway.
I own two, and it's not that bad to maintain them even on student's budget.
You just have to get a bit creative.
