>What do you do if the spring cannot be found anywhere in the car?
Hi Gerard,
The spring is about two inches long and fairly heavy duty, ie. hard to
stretch it with your fingers. If you're friendly with the parts guy at
the dealer he would probably just give you one...gratis. Otherwise
just pick up a few at a good hardware store and see which one works
best. Probably two-three bucks out of pocket. While you're at it
reinforce the top perch for the spring. The perch on the bottom of the
flap doesn't usually give way. The top one is probably broken anyway
since the spring is gone. The finesse people up here use a 90 degree
angle drill (little battery operated one) and drill out a hole in the
plastic at the site of the top perch to put a cotter pin through, but
I just used a coupla of beefy cable ties :) I used a couple in case
one breaks so I have another perch to use. So far so good after a
couple of years.
Top perch looks like this (crappy ASCII art):
| |
|----| <-middle - drill hole from here to other side
| |
The perch in the middle breaks so the cotter pin is inserted through.
I just wrapped the cable ties around the whole thing in the same area
about half an inch apart and snugged them up. After that a pair of
long, angled needle nose pliers puts the spring in place with not too
much effort.
