I own a 4000 rally car and I agree somewhat with both Seth and Martin. The
2.2 NA engine, if
tuned and setup properly has great torque and a strong power band for most
of the rally's on the
east coast. A great and durable engine to learn how to drive -if they are
setup properly.
They are durable and their are a lot of parts out there (BTDT - just
replaced the
front right nose due to an off) and they are cheap.

Regarding buying a prepared car - I looked around a lot at the other cars
that where already prepared and
I was not happy with either there construction or they took a major hit in
the body, went through a major
rebuild, and that made me leery. It is typically cheaper to buy a prepared
car
but you will also inherit the problems and usually allot of spare parts.

I went with 5k front struts and 90 (URQ) rears with a 5 bolt conversion.
Since I am a heavy left foot
braker I would run out of brakes early so I installed G60's from a 5k as
well. I bought the
URQ ball joints and VW A2 tie rod ends to work through problems that Martin
talked about. Everybody
has a their own priority list for what is important in there car and after
the safety (cage, seats and belts)
I felt that suspension was next (I know others who felt that paint job was
more important than suspension!)

I can go through the details for both the suspension swap, cage and there
are real experts on the list that can talk
through the turbo swap (I am half-way through it currently)

Let me know
