Considering the rules on the books for the SCCA and CAR, as well as what's
being proposed for 2003 (in the SCCA at least) it is my understanding that
a 198X Audi 4000CS Quattro can compete in CLUBRALLY as either a Production
GT (very limited changes), or OPEN class (the Big Boyz!) under the CLUB or
PRO designation.

For a first time / first season rally effort the general concensus from the
drivers who have done well is that you're better off learning in a
Production or Grp 2 car. The constraints of either of these classes in
terms of motors/driveline are (SCCA rules roughtly quoted):
1. Less than 2400cc equalized displacement
2. 2WD
The difference between Production and Grp 2 is that Grp 2 you can pretty
much do anything you want.

The reason I am making the point about Club rally is that current trend is
for an age limit on Pro cars. I think it likely that a 6 or 7 year rule
will come into effect if not already there. Additionally if you're running
less than 3-5 races a year then you really belong in Club. If you're going
to buy someone else's car then pick something cheap and 2wd, you'll be a
better driver for it later.

But if you're sitting on a 4000CS Quattro and you want to try rally I would
suggest prepping it for Production GT rules as it will be the least costly
prep out there. Before someone says you couldn't be competative with a
non-mod'd 4000CS Q, I would offer that a 1999 Subaru Imprezza 'L' with the
1.8L, 110hp motor I nav'd in at the 2001 WildWest Rally was good enough for
us to take 3rd place in class! Podium finish in a lower class is mucho
more rewarding than mid-pack in the big leagues. BTDT.
