Thanks for the advice Ed.
I think the general concencus of opinion seems to be that although you can
get away without removing the gear wheel, you are better off removing it (if
you're strong enough!) and you will probably want to replace the front cam
seal anyway.
I have a Bentley (two in fact), but it's got two problems - it's for US
models which sometimes differ significantly, although engine procedures are
still valid, and it shows the Audi technician recommended way of doing
things, not the diy method. The Haynes manual, for all its deficiencies,
has some advantages there but the qlist is the ultimate reference source for
this kind of info.
