I can think of great analogies I've chuckled about over my years on these
lists: Clutch can be installed by removing the engine not trans, outer
driveshafts can be R&R'd on car, 10vt EM's can be removed with IM's on the
car, front springs can be replaced with struts in car, center support
bearings can be serviced in car, 10v/20v engines can be pulled out from
above, TB can be serviced with front end and aux rad in place. Now lifter
service without removing the cam gear. More specifically Phil (read Javad's
procedure carefully), without even removing the belt from the gear!

I'll stick to the real world experience and reasoning here, doing lifters
with cam gear attached is wrong, risky and hardly a time saver. Doing this
procedure with the TB attached to the cam gear itself needs no further
comment. Please feel free to disagree with any of my experience, I'll smile
at the addition of Javad's procedure to your site. I'm happy to ingorantly
reflect that I've never considered doing this procedure as Javad or even you
have admitted. I'll stick to my posts as written, comparing a 20v cam
removal to the 10v cam removal for lifters, one is possible, one isn't.

But I've done a few with the cam gear on - it's absolutely no problem
with the MB/1B/MC engines. "Walking" the belt off the cam gear is
usually no problem, and with the front cam bearing cap off the seal
lifts quite easily. With the long wrench pictured, jiggling the cam
gear so that even a quite tight belt cam be walked back on is not
difficult.
