'89 90Q - clicking/ticking time bomb?

Please, if anyone has some ideas:

I have a 1989 90Q with about 190k miles I bought last spring.

it has the following intermittent ticks/clicks:

two separate, usually only one, right under the left dash speaker. Sounds a
lot like a relay freaking out. I thought it was one of the relays in the
fuse box in the rain tray, but I have confirmed they are defiantly in the
dash.  Anyone had this problem? is it a relay(s) going out, or a sensor
going out triggering the relays, or the mad bomber?

also, the is a loud tick that is INTERMITTENT that seems to come from the
bell housing.  I don't think it's the crank, maybe in the tranny. I can't
tell.  Car drives fine.

All of these noises I can't find any way to induce. They seem fairly
random.
As far as I'm aware, the car is completely stock, except I put a new stereo
in, using the stock speakers.
