200tq 10v surging etc.

Hi all,

I test drove a 1989 200tq this evening. I don't really need another Audi,
but this one is intriguing, and fairly cheap.

It's got some problems - it's a salvage title, it has a bad ABS sensor, the
power mirror switch is dead, the heated seats are dead, etc., but there are
a couple gray areas:

1. There's a persistent idle surge. The idle hits about 1000 RPM, jumps to
1500 RPM, and back and cycles rapidly and persistently.

2. There's a growl/rattle from the engine between 3000-5000 RPM that sounds
a little ominous (bearings, distributor shaft play?)

Overall, the car is a little rough, but I'm considering this a "beater" or
possible track car. It's had a lot of work done to it recently (timing
belt, brakes, exhaust, shocks, brake light fix, etc.).

I've checked Mockry's site for general care and feeding of the 10v turbo
but would appreciate anyone's input.

Thanks,

Dan Sinclair
