door locks

WRT the door locks discussion thread, does anyone know exactly why Audi,
MBZ, et al chose to operate their power door lock systems via vacuum.  It
seems as thought the complexity and bulk of these systems could easily be
alleviated with a simple solenoid operated system ala GM, etc.  Has anyone
out there successfully converted to Solenoids?  Anyone want to speculate on
the pros/cons.  Just food for thought.
