Matt,
Foamy trans fluid is a typical symptom of too much fluid. Foamy fluid can
damage the trans. Getting the fluid level right is tricky because the
difference between the right amount and too much/too little is only a few
ounces... 4 - 6 extra ounces can be too much. One of the biggest problems
with a leaking tranny is the constant challenge of topping it up with the
right amount. The book says to check the fluid when warm, with the engine
running and the trans in "Park", and on LEVEL ground. Warm is defined as
after driving 6 miles. Drive too far, or fluid too hot/cold and the level
will be different. Also, full means between the two marks on the
dipstick... don't feel you have to keep it at the top mark, because the
level will vary with conditions. You might want to check it several times
under different conditions before deciding whether more needs to be added.
I found that if I changed the fluid and put the amount in called for by
Bentley it was too much. One way to remove a small amount is with a turkey
baster and plastic tube down the dipstick hole.
