Don't know the cost of a chain and related gear. In 20 years of MB
ownership, never replaced one. Did replace the tensioner on a 6 cylinder
Turbo-Diesel at 165K.

My dealer given estimate for a 91-100, I-5 motor was $125--complete.
However, I traded up to a 93-100S, V-6 which just received the new T-belt
and idler.
Parts cost was close to $300. This is a V-6 motor.
BTW, the Porsche 911 series motor of the late 70's thru mid 80's had many
problems with chain tensioner's.
Ed Birch.....93-100S.
(I miss the I-5)
