Any advice / BTDT's on removing EGR valve on V6?

I'm trying to replace the EGR valve on my '95 90Q and I'm having quite a bit of
trouble getting the old one off. With great difficulty, I was able to get wrenches
and sockets on the bolts that secure the flange to the engine block so that much is
done. However, I am at a loss as to how to unscrew the valve itself from the pipe
that it is attached to. I see 3 pieces on which a wrench could possibly go - the
valve itself, the nut immediately below the valve (looks like it's a lock nut
perhaps), and then the "nut" that's on the top of the pipe. The problem is, there's
no conceivable way of actually getting a wrench into that tight space - the only
access is vertical. Is there some special wrench or tool available? I'm hesitant
to just torque the valve for fear of bending or breaking the pipe. The only other
idea I have is to remove that pipe and take it completely out of the engine bay to
swap out the EGR valves. It looks like this would entail removing a good deal of
the remainder of the exhaust system, including the cats, just to get access, which
is something I'd like to avoid. I did some searching on the archives, but nothing
stood out. Anyone have any good ideas or experience with this? Thanks,
Joel
