Sounds like the climate control _sensor_ fan.  Easy enough to tell;
have someone  listen right over the small square grille in the
dashboard.

It can randomly start making clicking noises etc as the fan blade
assembly bounces around and the blades hit things like the sides of
tube etc.  Drives many a type44 owner beserk.  Mine will go into a
"mode"; when its in the "mode" it clicks with EVERY tarstrip etc in
the road.   Potholes generate a plethora of clicks.  The 5000 was the
same way.

If that's what it is, from what I've heard, its tough to get to.
I've just put up with its shenanigans for 4 years :-)
