He's exactly correct.
Candlepower is a function of brightness AND area; watts are a unit of energy.
Thusly, since you gave him only (arguably) brightness but not
distance, tada, he's right...and further, its technically impossible
to come up with any sort of direct correlation between the two
because they share absolutely no units in common.
Kid behind the counter was probably thinking "goddamit, I have to
work another Saturday and this guy didn't look in the $#!% book next
to the bulbs to figure out which one fits his car, and hes asking me
about what 'candlepower' is when I'm just the guy who rings up the
parts..." :-)
Watch Clerks some time and you'll get a whole new appreciation for
the guys on the -other- side of the counter. I believe the slogan
for Clerks was "they have to serve you, that doesn't mean they LIKE
you" :-)
