U-pull-it junkyard part. $10, maybe - they have no idea what this is, or
what a new one costs.
To check if the replacement is OK, see if you can depress the little
spring-loaded buttons under the actuating lever. If they move easily and
equally (slight "click" if I remember correctly), the part is OK.
Bleeding the brakes will be a PITA, but at least you will have saved $190+,
and you'd still have to bleed the brakes with a new valve.
I do remember tying to take my old one apart (it had the same problem as
yours). It simply would NOT open up, and I had a great selection of various
implements of destruction available.
