VW cute parts (NAC) - brief rant

It seems that VW's aspirations to move upscale with their product begin with
adopting upscale OEM parts price policy before improving their quality.
Case in point - Canadian VW dealers ask $890 CDN before tax for a new
alternator for a 1999 New Beetle, $600 or so for a rebuilt. Isn't it a bit
very @#*&^ing steep if it lasted only 3 years and 120,000 km? Or is this
crazy or what? I know someone @ VW has worked @ Porsche for years and
they're not shy about their OEM parts prices ...

On a lighter note, only the bearings failed so far, so $200 @ an independent
shop will fix it ...

On an even lighter note, someone at VW headquarters needs to take the
insanity test - this is one version:

To male folks, who'd care: It's not advisable to let your wives/significant
others, etc. be seduced by the "cute car", it's not a bad car but some
pieces on it are BLOODY expensive ...

Please forward to any VW lists under "sobering tips" or some such
