Everybody else seems to have covered the mechanical things that may have
failed, and since I have nothing to contribute in that regard, I'm going to
take a different slant on this and say nothing is wrong. From the timing of
your e-mail I take it you noticed it when you went out to lunch. Given that
it was in the 40s on Friday and a bright sunny day here in the Northeast, it
could simply be that the temp sensor in the headliner by the sunroof
controls was satisfied. I've noticed this same thing occur on my car. Get
cool air at the normal setting of 70F, but if I bump it up to around 78F or
so it starts giving me heat. In the morning or evening it always works
normally, but on a mild sunny day when I go out during the day I get cool
air. Try opening the sunroof and windows for a couple of minutes and see if
you start getting heat while it is still set at 70F.
