CGT still won't run!!!

For the last week I have been in the process of replacing the head gasket on
my Wunder-car after it decided that said gasket was the weakest piece of the
puzzle.

I had it all together and running once for about 5 minutes, I turned it off
to make sure nothing was leaking and when I went to start it again all it
would do is crank.

Tonite I rechecked all the timing marks and re-indexed the distributor, and
still it will crank until the garage smells like fuel but nothing happens.
For some reason it just doesn't seem to be getting a spark. The plugs are
brand-new, the cap and rotor appear fine, no cracks etc.. The plug wires
are about 6 months old and so is the coil. I put a test light to both
sides of the coil and both sides light the bulb when grounded. Should I be
able to get a reading from the center of the coil also??

After repeated attempts to start the engine I pulled off the oil cap and
noticed that it was a little smoky inside the cover, should that be a sure
sign that the head is broken, valve seals are bad???

TIA to anyone that helps,
P.S. someone let the "Audi gods" know I am thinking aobut buying a Diesel
Jetta maybe that will make them listen to my cries for help, since I am
getting tired of sacrificing all those pretty green backs. . .

Thanks again
Matt Kramer
