Matt, it all depends. First off you need to set your motor to TDC. From there, with both #1 intake valves closed, generally the vacuum adv. can faces down and back towards the drivers side fender, but only if the center of the rotor is lined up with the mark in the side of the dist. body. From here you really need to get a timing light to fine tune the ignition advance, usually about 5-10 degrees BTDC, spec is 6
If you don't have a timing light, you need to get one. Also, get this procedure down, I have a feeling that you havn't been able to start your car becuase you timing has been way off, BTDT. Let me know if its still not clear
